Celta Vigo vs Girona: Preview
Celta Vigo form analysis
After an inconsistent first half of the season, Celta Vigo had shown signs of finding their form in January before back-to-back defeats brought frustration for the manager. Their latest outing ended in a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Real Sociedad, failing to really threaten as their attacking struggles returned. That loss followed a 1-1 draw away at relegation-battlers Mallorca, giving up a lead as Celta’s defensive issues persisted.
With Celta sitting just three points above the relegation zone in 15th, tightening up defensively is paramount if they are to secure survival comfortably. Going forward the talent is there, with veteran striker Iago Aspas impressing recently alongside exciting young Norwegian Jørgen Strand Larsen. But finding the right balance and greater consistency is crucial if Celta are to pull away from danger in the months ahead.
Girona form analysis
Girona have been in excellent goalscoring form of late, winning matches convincingly. They began with a 3-0 victory over Alaves in mid-December through Dovbyk and Portu goals. A week later they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Real Betis. Girona then produced one of their best results by defeating Atletico Madrid 4-3 in an entertaining game in early January, taking a 2-0 lead before fighting back from 3-2 down.
However, they were unable to break down Almeria two weeks later, managing only a 0-0 draw. Most impressively, Girona thrashed Sevilla 5-1 at home last weekend with Dovbyk scoring a hat-trick and goals from others. While defensively they have been vulnerable on occasion, Girona’s potent attack has fired them to impressive wins. If they can maintain this form while tightening up at the back, a top half finish is possible.
