Norway Chess 2025: World’s Top Players Set to Face Off in Stavanger
The 13th edition of Norway Chess is gearing up to be an exciting event for chess enthusiasts around the world. This year’s tournament will mark the first classical meeting between World Champion Magnus Carlsen and world number-one GM Gukesh since the Indian claimed the title in Singapore.
Maintaining its hallmark traditions, both Norway Chess events will feature the same format, prize fund, and venue again, with eight of the twelve participants returning from last year.
Strong Field of Players
The world’s top players will once again gather in Stavanger, Norway, from May 26 to June 7 to compete in a six-player double round-robin classical tournament. In addition to the traditional event, the tournament continues with six strong players.
Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura, Erigaisi, Gukesh, and Wei Yi are among the top players set to participate in this year’s Norway Chess event. The big star in the field, besides Carlsen, is world champion Gukesh, who will face off with Carlsen in classical for the first time since being crowned. The two last met in the quarterfinal, with Carlsen defeating his young rival 1.5-0.5.
“We are extremely satisfied with the field we have this year,” said CEO of Norway Chess, Kjell Madland. “It’s a mix of young and strong players and some more established ones. It was important for us to have a variety of nations represented, such as China, India, and the U.S.A. It’s going to be very exciting.”
Rare Opportunity to Watch Carlsen in Classical
Norway Chess provides a rare opportunity for fans to watch the world number one in action in a classical tournament. Carlsen has indicated that he intends to focus more on events like the Grand Chess Tour and the World Rapid & Blitz Championship, making Norway Chess possibly his only classical event in 2025.
Despite his reduced involvement in classical chess, organizers remain optimistic about Carlsen’s continued participation. “We have no reason to believe Magnus won’t return in future editions. He has stated that he enjoys playing here, and we have a great relationship with him,” Madland confirmed.
Women’s Tournament Continues to Make History
In 2024, Norway Chess made history as the world’s first super-tournament with an equal prize fund for both the Women and Open sections. This year, the event returns with five of the six players from last year, including 2024 champion and Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun.
The Women’s tournament features some of the world’s top female players, with Ju Wenjun leading the pack. The tournament runs concurrently with the main event, showcasing the talents of female players alongside their male counterparts.
The 2025 Norway Chess promises to be a thrilling competition, with players engaging in intense battles on the chessboard. With a strong field of participants and an equal focus on both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments, fans can look forward to some exciting games and unexpected outcomes in Stavanger.
