The iconic Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez has reached an agreement with William Scull, but it looks like this won’t be his next fight. Following his win over Jaime Munguia during the Cinco de Mayo weekend in May. Alvarez has been linked to a number of high-profile contenders for his return in September, including Davi Benavidez and Dmitry Bivol.
Alvarez’s next opponent might not be Scull
To retain his undisputed super-middleweight world title, “Cinnamon” was scheduled to face IBF mandatory challenger William Scull, who is currently the top contender. The purse bids for the fight were announced, but now they have been delayed. Many fans speculated that Alvarez would seek a more prominent opponent, and it seems that is likely. On Tuesday, Scull’s promoter announced a deal with TGB Promotions on behalf of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, leading to confusion.
The Cuban fighter has a impressive record
However, according to a report, the agreement could include a step-apart payment. If a step-aside deal does happen, Scull would receive compensation for allowing Alvarez to fight his next opponent. Despite being less well known globally, the Cuban fighter has an impressive 22-0 record with nine knockouts. Scull’s last fight was on the Canelo vs. Munguia undercard in Las Vegas, which was also due for a step-aside arrangement.
The 32-year-old Scull started his career with nine wins in Argentina before moving to Germany, where he rose steadily in the rankings. He also held the IBF rank #1 during 2019 and 2024 while fighting only in Germany. His most noteworthy win came against undefeated Evgeny Shvedenko in 2022, one of just four 12-round bouts in his career.

David Benavidez is planning to appeal to remain Canelo’s mandatory WBC super middleweight challenger. A recent medical test suggests Benavidez could be ready to fight Alvarez in September, which matches the Mexican’s history of fighting on Mexican Independence Day weekend. Benavidez recently won the WBC interim light heavyweight belt and has 10 days to decide whether he will retain the title and potentially fight the winner of the upcoming light heavyweight title or remain the mandatory challenger for Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight title.
