Canelo Alvarez soon might face British fighter Chris Eubank Jr. to defend his undisputed super-middleweight title. Chris Eubank is inching closer to capturing the 168-pound title, which Canelo last defended in May against Jaime Munguia with a dominant win. Canelo dropped Munguia to the canvas and then cruised to a smooth unanimous decision win. This was the Mexican boxer’s fourth consecutive win.
Eubank Jr has finally got a big opportunity
Alvarez is now looking for his next opponent for a potential return to the ring later this year. According to a report, the British fighter Chris Eubank has become the favorite to challenge Canelo, who is often considered boxing’s biggest attraction. Chris has not fought since avenging his loss to Liam Smith last September. The Brit boxer has long been looking for a clash with Gennady Golovkin but has been overlooked. Now he has the opportunity he’s been waiting for, with a clash against Canelo that also promises a hefty payday.
However, it is still hard to justify giving Chris Eubank a title shot in the super-middleweight division. Several fans want Canelo to face David Benavidez Jr., who has 24 knockouts in his 29 consecutive wins. However, the Mexican fighter is not interested in this matchup, as he dismissed the notion recently in an interview. Despite Benavidez being mandatory for a long time for his WBC world championship, Canelo has ruled himself out of this matchup.
Alvarez dismissed the clash with Benavidez
Canelo stated that maybe it’s one of the biggest bouts, but Benavidez brings nothing to the table, he just brings 25 pounds on the fight night. The champion said that if a promoter offers $150-$200 million, he’ll fight tomorrow.
Alvarez has been among the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters for nearly a decade and has lost only two of his 65 professional fights and won world titles in four weight divisions. Canelo’s last defeat was in 2022, against Dmitry Bivol. On the other hand, Eubank Jr. is still seeking a recognized world championship after holding the IBO super-middleweight title.
