Cagliari vs Genoa: Preview
Cagliari form analysis
Cagliari’s recent run of games has showcased a leaky defense undermining attacking promise. They started with a valiant 1-3 home loss to AC Milan, taking a shock lead before being outclassed after the break. Heavy defensive issues surfaced next game in a 0-3 home thrashing by Fiorentina, undone by sloppy set piece defending. However, Cagliari’s attack showed life in a spirited 1-4 home loss to Roma, going 4-0 down before pulling one back late via a Nandez penalty.
Back came the defensive problems in their next game, throwing away a two goal lead at home to draw 2-2 with Salernitana in the 90th minute. Most recently they were involved in a seven goal thriller, drawing 3-3 at home with Frosinone despite going 3-0 down early on in another defensive horror show. Overall, Cagliari have shown endeavour in attack but are far too open at the back. Tightening up defensively is crucial if they hope to make an immediate Serie A return after relegation last season.
Genoa form analysis
Genoa’s recent run of games has showcased an exciting attack capable of threatening any team, even if defensive issues remain. They started in stunning fashion, demolishing Roma 4-1 at home thanks to goals from Guðmundsson, Retegui, Thorsby and Junior Messias. However, problems surfaced at the back in a chaotic 2-2 away draw at Udinese, twice leading through Guðmundsson but pegged back late on.
This continued next game as they suffered a heartbreaking 0-1 home loss to AC Milan, matching the champions throughout before a late Pulisic goal. Genoa then came back down to earth with a 0-2 home defeat to Atalanta, outplayed by the visitors’ potent attack. Most recently they returned to winning ways with a hard fought 1-0 home victory over Salernitana courtesy of another Guðmundsson goal. Overall, Genoa have impressed going forward but need greater solidity defensively.
