Burnley vs Chelsea: Preview
Burnley form analysis
The Clarets suffered a 1-3 home loss to Aston Villa initially, with only Foster’s goal to show for their efforts. Defensive issues then resurfaced in a heavy 2-5 home defeat to Tottenham, despite twice taking the lead through Foster and Brownhill. Burnley then drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest, with Amdouni again scoring before being pegged back by Hudson-Odoi’s equalizer.
They followed that up with a narrow 0-1 home loss to Manchester United, undone by a Bruno Fernandes goal on the stroke of halftime. Most recently, Burnley lost 0-2 at home to Newcastle, with goals from Almiron and Isak sealing the win.
Overall, it’s been a difficult return to the Premier League for Burnley as expected. Despite Foster’s best efforts, they struggled to come up with chances and appeared defensively weak. Amdouni, a recent addition, has impressed with important goals, nevertheless.
If manager Vincent Kompany can make Burnley harder to beat and more productive in attack, they have a platform to build on. But improving defensive organization and adding more goal threat are essential if Burnley are to have any hope of avoiding relegation this season. The signs so far have not been very promising.
Chelsea form analysis
Chelsea began with a comfortable 3-0 home win over Luton, with new signing Sterling netting twice on his home debut. However, Chelsea’s struggles in attack resurfaced in a shock 0-1 home loss to Nottingham Forest. Their offensive woes continued in a goalless draw away at Bournemouth.
Chelsea then suffered another narrow 1-0 home defeat, this time against Aston Villa after Watkins’ second half strike. Most recently though, Chelsea produced an improved attacking display to beat Fulham 2-0 away, thanks to goals from new signings Mudryk and Broja.
Overall, Chelsea have struggled in attack under new manager Graham Potter, scoring just 6 goals in their opening 6 games. Despite the win over Luton, chance creation has been a real issue. New signings have yet to make an impact. Defensively Chelsea have been fairly solid aside from some individual errors. But their lack of cutting edge upfront has led to disappointing results like the defeats to Forest and Villa. The Fulham win provides encouragement, but substantially improved productivity in attack is still needed.
