Brighton vs Crystal Palace: Preview
Brighton form analysis
The Seagulls ended 2023 by drawing 1-1 away at Crystal Palace after conceding first before Danny Welbeck equalized late on. They started 2024 in sensational form, hammering Tottenham 4-2 at home. Goals from youngster James Hinshelwood, two João Pedro penalties and Pervis Estupiñán gave Brighton a commanding 4-0 lead before two late Spurs consolations. A 0-0 away draw at West Ham maintained momentum before a goalless home draw with Wolves brought the attack back down to earth.
Most recently, Brighton suffered a shocking 4-0 thrashing away at Luton Town. Elijah Adebayo netted a hat trick as Brighton’s defense crumbled alarmingly. Overall, Brighton’s form has fluctuated wildly in recent weeks between the highs of big wins and lows of heavy defeats. Defensive issues remain and the Luton defeat in particular highlighted a soft underbelly. For Roberto De Zerbi, adding steel and focus to complement the attack could make Brighton a dangerous top half force. But inconsistency remains their Achilles heel.
Crystal Palace form analysis
Crystal Palace ended 2023 by drawing 1-1 at home against Brighton after Jordan Ayew’s opener was cancelled out by a late Danny Welbeck strike. A 2-1 loss away at Chelsea followed before a 3-1 home win over Brentford put Palace back on track despite conceding early. Three goals in 44 minutes highlighted Palace’s attacking potential. However, a 5-0 thrashing away at league leaders Arsenal brought Palace back down to earth as their defense was ripped apart ruthlessly.
Most recently, a thrilling 3-2 home win against Sheffield United displayed both the best and worst of Palace. Goals from Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise overturned an early deficit but defending remained an issue as Palace continued to leak goals. Overall, Palace’s form shows a pattern of goals and entertainment at both ends. Plugging holes at the back could transform Palace into top half contenders but erratic defensive performances may continue to limit their potential.
