BBL 13: There comes a major update from the house of Melbourne Stars. Their star player Glenn Maxwell has stepped down as Melbourne Stars Captain. Maxwell took the drastic decision after the club failed to make it to the finals. A leading media portal confirmed the news to ESPNcricinfo. Maxwell communicated about the same to the Stars after their final game of the season against Hobart Hurricanes. After that, they were out of contention for the finals following Adelaide Strikers’ victory over Sydney Thunder after they lost control of their fate by losing to Melbourne Renegades.
Maxwell has two years left to renew his current contract. In this season, Maxwell made 243 runs at 34.71 & a strike rate of 173.57 although his top score was an unbeaten 35 along with seven wickets in the kitty. Stars & Hurricanes are the two clubs that have not won even a single edition of the league. They have been runner-up three times, including back-to-back in 2018-19 and 2019-20, and had the BBL8 title within their grasp before an astonishing collapse against the Renegades.
What did Glenn Maxwell say after stepping down from Captaincy?
“We put our fate in the hands of others, which is never ideal in this sport,” Maxwell shared with Fox Cricket in the closing match of the season. “After a strong start, facing the challenge of not clinching that final victory has been frustrating, especially considering our earlier dominance. Over the last four years, being out of contention for the finals adds to the frustration. We believe our team is strong, but we’ve faced challenges with injuries, timing, and replacements, and it all seems to pile up.”
Even the former England coach who had coached the stars in the first season has praised Maxwell’s impact on the Club.
“Credit to him; after a stellar World Cup for both himself and Australia, he brings that enthusiasm and drive every day, which is exactly what you want as a coach,” Moores mentioned during the season’s final game. “In his role as captain for the Stars, he’s poured his heart and soul into it. The interactions have been enjoyable, both in the context of the game and outside of it. It’s been a great deal of fun beyond the field as well.”
Meanwhile, the Stars will look ahead to get the services of their key player, Marcus Stoinis by resigning him for the next season. Stoinis’s contract has expired & the club will look ahead to get him back on board.
