India had already secured a spot in the final against Sri Lanka on Sunday so the team they decided to go with against Bangladesh was on a lighter side. In an effort to test their bench strength, India made five changes to the team that had defeated Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Key players such as Virat Kohli, Mohammad Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah were rested. Bangladesh’s wicketkeeper, Mushfiqur Rahim, was not available for the match due to personal reasons, and Tanzid Hasan made his debut.
Bangladesh’s Tanzim Sakib (2-32) and Mustafizur Rahman (3-50) were the standout bowlers in the match. However, the real hero for Bangladesh was their captain Shakib Al Hasan, who scored 80 runs off 85 balls, including six fours and three sixes.
He also bowled Suryakumar Yadav (26) with his left-arm spin and gave away only 43 runs in his 10 overs, which included two maidens. Despite India’s Shubman Gill scoring a century, his team never gained momentum during their run chase and lost wickets at regular intervals.
Shubman Gill played the anchor role for India during their chase, despite losing wickets at the other end. He scored his fifth ODI century, which was also his fourth this year, in a 133-ball innings that included eight fours and five sixes.
However, India’s chase got off to a poor start as captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed by the second ball of the innings. Debutant Tilak Varma also fell shortly after, with right-arm seamer Tanzim Sakib accounting for both wickets.
Despite Axar Patel’s efforts to rescue India’s innings with a score of 42 off 34 balls, India was unable to catch up to Bangladesh’s total. Indian captain Rohit Sharma explained that the team’s decision to give game time to other players was made with the bigger picture in mind, which is the upcoming World Cup.
Sharma praised Patel’s character and batting performance, but credited the Bangladesh bowlers for their strong performance. Sharma also commended Shubman Gill for his brilliant century, stating that Gill has a strong understanding of his game and knows how to play it well.
