Arun Vishnu, Key Figure in Indian Women’s Doubles Badminton, Quits National Setup to Start Academy in Nagpur
Arun Vishnu, a renowned coach who has played a pivotal role in the rise of women’s doubles badminton in India, has made the decision to step away from the national setup to embark on a new chapter. The 36-year-old coach from Kozhikode, known for his instrumental contributions to players like Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, as well as his role in pairing Ashwini Ponnappa with Tanisha Crasto, is set to launch his own academy in Nagpur alongside his wife, Arundhati Pantawane, a former international player.
Transition to Nagpur
Arun Vishnu shared, “I have resigned from my position in December following the World Tour Finals. After dedicating eight and a half years to coaching within the national setup and creating unforgettable memories, I have decided to relocate to Nagpur and establish an academy there by March.” His decision to move to Nagpur is primarily driven by his desire to be closer to his ageing father-in-law.
Having worked closely with chief national coach Pullela Gopichand since his mixed doubles national title win in 2016, Arun Vishnu has played a significant role in the development of India’s badminton talent.
Contributions and Achievements
Reflecting on his coaching journey, Arun Vishnu stated, “I initially focused on junior players for the first four years before shifting my attention to women’s doubles in the last four years. During this time, there have been numerous highlights, including witnessing the success of players like Gayatri and Treesa, who reached World No. 9.”
He further added, “I firmly believe in the potential of these players to break into the top five rankings. I am also proud of guiding Ashwini and Tanisha to qualify for the Olympics, a feat that exceeded expectations.” Arun Vishnu was part of the support staff that contributed to India’s silver medal win at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and played a crucial role in the country’s performances at the 2018 and 2022 Asian Games.
Moreover, his involvement in India’s historic medal win at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships last year solidified his reputation as a key figure in the Indian badminton community.
