The captain of Pakistan’s cricket team, Babar Azam, expressed his delight at receiving praise from one of the best in the game, Virat Kohli. A few weeks back, Kohli conveyed his admiration and recounted his initial encounter with Babar Azam in a conversation with Star Sports.
Virat Kohli said, “I saw a lot of regard and respect from him from day one, and that hasn’t changed. Regardless of the fact he’s probably the top batsman in the world across formats, performing so consistently and rightly so. He has amazing talent and I’ve always enjoyed watching him play.”
Responding to Virat’s remarks prior to the Asia Cup on Star Sports, Babar discussed the impact Virat has had on his playing style.
“It’s a wonderful feeling. When someone speaks about you in such terms. Kohli’s words have filled me with pride and happiness.”
“Such commendation instills confidence. Back in 2019, when I met him, he was at the pinnacle of his career. Even now, he continues to excel. I aimed to extract insights from his gameplay. I learned a great deal from him. He offered comprehensive explanations to all my queries. That proved immensely beneficial.”
Both players have showcased exceptional performance in One Day International (ODI) matches throughout the years. Babar, who recently played a match-winning knock of 151 in 131 balls against Nepal, maintains an impressive average of 59.47 in the ODI format, accumulating a total of 5353 runs. He has amassed 19 ODI centuries, quickest in terms of innings taken to reach that milestone.
Conversely, Virat has accumulated 12898 runs at an average of 57.32. He boasts 46 ODI centuries, securing the second-highest position in the history of this format.
Virat spoke to Star Sports about his affinity for ODI cricket and why this format brings out his best performance.
“I have a strong fondness for ODI cricket. It’s the one format that rigorously tests every aspect of your game. Your technique, your poise, adapting to various situations, and maneuvering through different phases of the match.
“This format thoroughly challenges a batsman, which is why I believe ODI cricket has consistently brought out the finest in me. I thrive on embracing these challenges and adapting my game to the given circumstances to contribute to my team’s success.
“As I mentioned earlier, it’s a continuous opportunity to assess myself. Every facet of my batting gets examined, and that’s why I derive immense pleasure from participating in ODI cricket.”
With the presence of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, and Shadab Khan in their bowling lineup, Pakistan possesses one of the most formidable attacks in international cricket.
Virat also acknowledged Pakistan’s potent bowling capabilities, expressing a high regard for their prowess.
“Their forte lies in bowling, and they boast a group of exceptionally influential bowlers who can shift the momentum of the game at any point, leveraging their skill set. Therefore, one must perform at the absolute pinnacle of their abilities to confront them successfully.”
