As Pakistan’s cricket team readies for their first ODI against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Babar Azam finds himself on familiar turf, both on and off the field.
The 30-year-old batting star has fond memories of Australia, where he has consistently excelled, boasting an impressive average of 67.33 runs against the host nation in one-day internationals. However, it was an off-field honor that held special significance for Azam ahead of this summer’s cricket tour down under.
During a visit to the Melbourne Cricket Club’s Long Room, Azam was invited to donate the bat he used in Pakistan’s 2022 World Cup final against England, a gesture he described as deeply meaningful.
As he admired the exhibits showcasing bats from some of the greatest players in cricket history, Azam reflected on the honor of having his bat join such illustrious company.
“Honestly, it is an honor for me, and this means a lot because I played a World Cup final using this bat,” Azam said on Friday. “I have many good memories at the MCG… it’s one of the best grounds in my life. It means a lot to me, and there are bats from a lot of great players here, so this is an honor for me.”
Azam’s contribution to the MCG’s collection underscores his connection to Australian cricket and adds to the excitement ahead of a series set to shape Pakistan’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy in February.
Adding to Pakistan’s campaign is former Australian paceman Jason Gillespie, who recently stepped in as Pakistan’s white-ball coach after South African Gary Kirsten’s sudden resignation.
Gillespie, who led Pakistan to a 2-1 Test series victory over England earlier this year, has brought both insight and enthusiasm to the team. According to Azam, Gillespie’s experience and positivity have made an immediate impact.
“He brings a lot of positive vibes,” Azam said. “We’ve discussed a lot of good things, and he knows the conditions here, having played and lived in Australia. This has helped me a lot, and it’s been beneficial for everyone.”
With both Pakistan and Australia aiming for strong performances as they build toward the Champions Trophy, the upcoming ODI series promises intense competition. For Azam and his team, the MCG once again offers a stage to create memories—both for their captain and the history of cricket.
