Big Setback for Mumbai Indians as Australian Pacer Behrendorff Out of IPL With Broken Leg
Australian fast bowler Jason Behrendorff will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season after suffering a broken leg in a training accident last week.
Behrendorff, a key member of the Mumbai Indians for the past two seasons, sustained the injury while batting during a net session at the WACA Ground in Perth. The 33-year-old revealed the news on his Instagram story, calling it a “freak accident” that resulted in a broken left fibula.
“Absolutely gutted to be missing this year’s IPL,” Behrendorff wrote. “Wishing Mumbai a successful season and hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to be back next year.”
The left-arm pacer was a crucial contributor for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023, finishing as their second-highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps in 12 matches at an impressive average of 9.21.
Also, during post World Cup white ball series between India and Australia, Behrendorff was the best bowler in subcontinent conditions for Australia where he got early swing and was effective during death overs.
Luke Wood replaces Jason Behrendorff for Mumbai Indians
Behrendorff’s absence has prompted the Mumbai Indians to sign English fast bowler Luke Wood as a replacement. Mumbai Indians has maintained the left arm and right arm pacer with Bumrah and Wood leading the bowling attack.
Despite the setback, Behrendorff’s recent form remains a positive. He was named Australia’s T20 Player of the Year in January for his performances in the team’s T20 series against India, even though Australia lost the series 4-1.
He was particularly economical in the third match, conceding just 12 runs in his four overs while taking one wicket as India posted a mammoth 222 runs.
Behrendorff also impressed in the Big Bash League (BBL), claiming 16 wickets in 10 matches for the Perth Scorchers at an average of 15.87.
With the T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the Caribbean, Behrendorff now faces a race against time to regain full fitness. He is reportedly considered a potential understudy for star Australian pacer Mitchell Starc.
The 16th edition of the IPL gets underway this Saturday. The first of the season will be played between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
