Renowned Australian Boxer Lemuel Silisia has tragically passed away following his first title fight in Tamworth. On Saturday, Silisia fought in the World Boxing Foundation in fround of a crowd of around 1,000 people for the lightweight title.
The death was reported on Wednesday night
The 27-year-old Boxer, Silisia, moved to Australia in 2021. He faced Adam Flood in a gruesome eight-round bout. Despite knocking down Adam in the third round, Silisia lost the fight on points. After the fight, he was taken to a hospital in Newcastle on Sunday due to the head injuries he sustained during the contest. The New South Wales Police reported his death on Wednesday night. His brother Colson shared an emotional tribute, announcing that Silisia was declared clinically dead after not responding to function tests.
Colson stated that his brother’s brave heart continued to fight until it finally stopped beating at 5:24 p.m. on Wednesday. “In this time of immense grief and sorrow, the Silisia family asks for your support and prayers. May your love, thoughts and prayers give solace as we overcome the pain of this loss. Although our hearts ache, we treasure the memories we shared with him, keeping his spirit alive in our hearts.”
Silisia’s family will bring him home to the Solomon Islands for his funeral. Lemuel made his professional Boxing debut in 2023, winning his first three bouts by knockout. The bout was a close contest, With Judges eventually scoring the fight 74-77 in Flood’s favor. Silisia’s amateur record included one bout he lost on points.
The number of deaths in the combat world has been rising recently
The number of deaths in professional boxing in recent years has been alarming. 2019 alone saw the deaths of three fighters, Maxim Dadashev, Patrick Day and Hugo Santillan, all of whom sustained injuries in the ring. The worrying trend continued with Jeanette Zacarias Zapata dying in 2021 after a knockout. Most recently, in July, Ardi Ndembo passed away after being in a coma for three weeks following a fight.
