Augsburg vs Bayer Leverkusen: Preview
Augsburg form analysis
FC Augsburg had shown promising early season form but have struggled for consistent results over their past five Bundesliga matches. On 25th November they were held to a 1-1 away draw at Union Berlin, going ahead through Demirović’s penalty before conceding late to Volland. Things improved on 4th December with a vital 2-1 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt earned thanks to goals from Jensen and Iago sandwiching an own goal concession. However, positive momentum stalled on 9th December after a disappointing 0-2 home defeat to Werder Bremen having no answer to goals from Stark and Ducksch.
Augsburg stopped the rot on 16th December with a credible 1-1 home draw against Borussia Dortmund, going ahead through Demirović before Dortmund levelled through Malen. But defensive issues persisted on 21st December during a heavy 0-3 home loss to Stuttgart, unable to handle goals from Undav, Guirassy and Führich. Overall, Augsburg must tighten up defensively after conceding eight times over this spell to turn draws back into wins.
Bayer Leverkusen form analysis
Bayer Leverkusen have found strong form over their past five Bundesliga matches. On 25th November they thrashed Werder Bremen 0-3 away, benefiting from an own goal before strikes from Frimpong and Grimaldo. Form remained positive on 3rd December as they drew 1-1 at home with Borussia Dortmund, responding quickly to Ryerson’s opener through Boniface. Leverkusen ground out another draw on 10th December, pegged back by Stuttgart away after going behind early to Führich before Wirtz soon equalised.
They returned to winning ways with a bang on 17th December, dispatching Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 at home thanks to goals from Boniface, Frimpong and Wirtz. Most recently on 21st December, ruthless form continued as Leverkusen thumped Bochum 4-0 through a perfect hat trick from Schick inside 45 minutes and a late Boniface strike. Overall, Leverkusen have found scoring form with 11 goals during this spell. Maintaining this clinical edge could fire them towards the title.
