Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla: Preview
Atletico Madrid form analysis
Atleti have made an unbeaten if inconsistent start under Diego Simeone, recording 2 wins and 1 draw from their opening 3 league games.
They began with a hard fought 3-1 home win over newly-promoted Granada, coming from behind before sealing victory late on through Morata and Llorente goals. Atletico then drew a blank in a 0-0 away stalemate with Real Betis.
However, Atletico looked back to their free-scoring best last time out, comprehensively demolishing Rayo Vallecano 7-0 away from home. Griezmann, Depay and Morata all impressed in a ruthless attacking display.
Overall, early signs have been promising for Atletico as they balance a transitional period on and off the pitch. Their demolition of Rayo shows Atletico can still blow teams away on their day with superb counter-attacking.
But finding more consistent creativity and converting draws into wins will be the next step for Atletico to re-establish their top four credentials this season. The platform is there after an unbeaten opening month.
Sevilla form analysis
Sevilla have made a very poor start to the season under new boss Julen Lopetegui, losing all 3 of their opening league games.
They began with a disappointing 1-2 home defeat to Valencia, equalizing En-Nesyri’s goal before conceding late. Things got worse as Sevilla then suffered a chaotic 3-4 home loss to Alaves, throwing away leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in a shambolic defensive display.
Most recently, Sevilla’s struggles continued with a 1-2 home loss to newly-promoted Girona. They were second best throughout as defensive issues persisted.
Overall, it’s been an alarming opening set of results for Sevilla as they lurch from one poor performance to another. Losing individual duals, conceding soft goals and lacking leadership has been clear to see.
Sevilla have appeared a shadow of the solid, pragmatic side built under Lopetegui before. Finding defensive solidity, motivation and confidence quickly will be critical to turning their form around. The attacking talent remains, but focus must be on building the foundations.
