Atletico Madrid vs Getafe: Preview
Atletico Madrid form analysis
Atleti have experienced ups and downs over their last five La Liga matches. On November 13th they came from behind to defeat Villarreal 3-1 at home, reacting well after Gerard Moreno’s opener to level through Axel Witsel before late goals from Antoine Griezmann and Samuel Lino completed the comeback. Atletico built on that result by grinding out a 1-0 win away to Mallorca on November 26th thanks to Griezmann’s winner. However, momentum stalled on December 4th as Atletico suffered late derby heartbreak against Barcelona, falling 1-0 at home to Joao Felix’s strike despite dominating.
Looking to respond, they faced Almeria on December 10th and bounced back to win 2-1 despite a second half wobble, with Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa scoring. But inconsistency plagued Atletico again last Friday as they were beaten 2-0 by Athletic Bilbao, struggling to create chances on the road. Overall Atletico have shown their typical defensive solidity. But manager Diego Simeone will want greater attacking threat. And ensure consistency from his talented squad as they try to recover their early season form.
Getafe form analysis
Getafe’s recent La Liga form has been inconsistent mixed with occasional bright moments. On November 11th they drew 1-1 away to Granada, taking an early lead before being pegged back. A week later Getafe claimed an important 2-1 home win over strugglers Almeria. Coming from behind as loanee Mason Greenwood forced an equalizer before Borja Mayoral grabbed a winner. However momentum stalled on December 2nd with a disappointing 2-0 loss away to Las Palmas.
Bouncing back quickly, Getafe returned home on December 9th to face Valencia and Mayoral proved the late match-winner in a fiery 1-0 victory. Building on that gritty display, Getafe traveled to crisis club Sevilla on December 16th and crushed the hosts 3-0, with Mayoral converting two penalties either side of Jaime Mata’s strike to seal an impressive triumph. While still battling relegation concerns, Getafe have shown they can compete with and beat sides around them in recent weeks. Harnessing their fighting spirit and getting top scorer Mayoral to continue his run of form could prove key to climbing out of trouble in the second half of the season.
