Atalanta vs Sassuolo: Preview
Atalanta form analysis
The Bergamo club has shown inconsistent league form recently, posting a mixed record over their last five Serie A matches with two wins, a draw, and two losses. Their most recent result was a tight 1-0 home victory over relegation candidates Lecce courtesy of an Ademola Lookman strike. That follows a disappointing 1-0 loss away to Bologna on December 23rd, failing to breakdown Bologna’s defense. Prior to that was an emphatic 4-1 home thrashing of Salernitana on December 19th, led by goals from Luis Muriel, Mario Pašalić, and Charles De Ketelaere.
Atalanta then suffered a dramatic 3-2 home loss to rivals AC Milan on December 9th, twice going ahead through Lookman goals but ultimately undone by late Milan strikes. This inconsistent spell began with an alarming 3-0 loss away to Torino on December 5th. While Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have shown tremendous attacking potential, defensive issues and concentration lapses have hampered their form. Addressing these fluctuations will be key in pushing for a return to Europe next season.
Sassuolo form analysis
Sassuolo has struggled mightily for form in Serie A action recently, without a single victory over their last five league matches and just two points claimed from a possible 15. Their latest disappointing result was a 1-0 loss away to title challengers AC Milan on December 30th. This follows a costly 2-1 home loss to relegation scrappers Genoa on December 22nd, failing to hold onto a Domenico Berardi-inspired lead.
Prior to that was a dramatic 2-2 home draw against Udinese on December 17th, with two late Berardi penalties rescuing a point after falling behind 2-0. Sassuolo then suffered a last-gasp 2-1 loss away at Cagliari on December 12th despite taking an early lead. Their winless run began with a gutting 2-1 home loss to rivals Roma on December 3rd after being up 1-0. With a leaky defense undermining Berardi and Armand Laurienté’s attacking contributions, manager Alessio Dionisi needs to quickly shore things up at the back while addressing the team’s mental fragility if they are to turn things around.
