Aston Villa vs Everton: Preview
Aston Villa form analysis
Villa began with an excellent 4-0 home win over Everton, playing some superb attacking football. They built on that with a 3-1 victory away at Burnley thanks to a Cash brace. However, Villa were then outclassed in a 0-3 home defeat to Liverpool as defensive issues surfaced.
They responded strongly by fighting back from a goal down to beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at home with late goals from Durán, Luiz and Bailey. Most recently, Villa earned their best result yet by defeating Chelsea 1-0 away courtesy of an Ollie Watkins goal, showing grit and resilience.
Overall, Villa have showcased their attacking threat, led by the pace and flair of Diaby and Bailey. At their best they have played some of the division’s most exciting football. However, lapses in concentration defensively have cost them at times.
The wins over Everton, Burnley and Chelsea demonstrated Villa’s qualities when focused. If manager Steven Gerrard can add greater solidity to complement the attack, a top half finish is very much on the cards for this talented young side.
Everton form analysis
Everton began with a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Wolves, undone by a late Kalajdzic goal. They did edge past Doncaster 2-1 in the League Cup thanks to goals from substitutes Beto and Danjuma. However, defensive issues resurfaced in a 2-2 draw away at Sheffield United, twice throwing away a lead.
Everton then suffered a narrow 0-1 home defeat to Arsenal, with Trossard’s second half strike proving decisive. Most recently though, Everton earned their first league win by beating Brentford 3-1 away, with goals from Doucouré, Tarkowski and Calvert-Lewin.
Overall, it’s been an underwhelming start to the season for Everton as they adjust to Lampard’s new system. They’ve struggled defensively and lacked a cutting edge aside from the Doncaster win. But the victory at Brentford demonstrated their potential when everything clicks.
