The Women’s Premier League auction (WPL auction 2024) finally got underway on Saturday, December 9 in Mumbai. A total of 165 players were considered for the 30 remaining slots across five franchises. Several big names in cricket, including Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin, Maia Bouchier, and others, went unsold.
An uncapped Indian player named ‘Anushka Sharma’, on the other hand, drew everyone’s attention. Fans expected Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) women to sign her as soon as her name appeared in the auction because she shares her name with the actor wife of star India batter Virat Kohli. However, the player went unsold, igniting a meme frenzy on X, and fans responded with the most hilarious reactions to the entire incident.
Insiders about WPL auction 2024:
Anushka, who has a base price of INR 10 Lakh, is a 20-year-old bowling all-rounder who plays for Madhya Pradesh Women in the Indian domestic circuit. She previously made headlines for her all-around performance in helping India B defeat India A in the first match of the Women’s U19 One Day Challenger Trophy in 2021.
The WPL auction was a high-octane affair, with two Indian uncapped players bidding for big bucks. The first was Vrinda Dinesh, who was sold to UP Warriorz for a whopping INR 1.30 crore. Vrinda, 22, is Karnataka’s opening batter and has been a run machine for her team over the last two seasons.
The second was Kashvee Gautam, who was purchased by Gujarat Giants for INR 2 crore. The 20-year-old is a right-arm seamer who can also whack a few at the bottom of the order. Notably, Gautam was the auction’s joint most expensive player, along with Annabel Sutherland, who was sold to the Delhi Capitals for INR 2 crore.
Meanwhile, X was awash in memes after Anushka Sharma failed to sell in the WPL 2024 auction. On the work front, Anushka will next be seen in ‘Chakda Xpress,’ which will be released on Netflix. The film’s official release date has yet to be announced. The film is currently in post-production, according to reports. It is based on cricketer Jhulan Goswami’s life and times.
