The Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk secured a historic split decision win against Tyson Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight champion, a title not held since 2000. “The Cat” remains undefeated after adding this win to his previous undisputed cruiserweight title. On the other hand, The Gypsy King got his first professional defeat in the match. Recently, heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua agreed with the judges’ decision, saying that Usyk was the clear winner of the fight. While there have been many opinions divided, most people saw Usyk winning the fight by one, two,or three rounds. The bout did face controversy, as many believed the 37-year-old Ukrainian should have won by stoppage in the ninth round.
Eighth round saw the dynamic of the fight changed
The dynamic of an intense and thrilling fight changed in the eighth round when Usyk landed a powerful right hook and left cross, followed by a stunning left cross that left Fury bloodied and bruised. The Ukrainian continued his constant attack in the ninth round, landing an astonishing 14 punches that left his opponent shaken. Although the referee considered stopping the fight, he allowed The British boxer to recover as he clung to the ropes, giving him a long count of eight. Fury displayed some typical resilience in the following rounds, but Usyk’s hard punches earned him wins in both the 10th and 11th rounds. Before the final round, Fury acknowledged Usyk’s dominant display of skill with a respectful touch of the gloves.
Will boxing fans get to see a rematch ?
Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, confirmed that a rematch clause exists in the contract and that a financial incentive for a second fight is sufficient. Warren hopes the rematch will take place in October, delaying a potential clash against Anthony Joshua until Usyk retires. Joshua, who is coming off a recent win against Francis Ngannou, may face Fury for a title fight considering his two defeats to Usyk. While the fighters can opt out of rematches for financial reasons, the significant payout for a rematch between Fury and Usyk makes it unlikely. If a rematch occurs, Warren expects AJ to be the next challenger for the winner.
