Angelo Mathews, an experienced all-rounder for Sri Lanka, became the first player to be timed out in the 146-year history of international cricket earlier this week during his team’s Cricket World Cup match against Bangladesh, sparking a major controversy. When Mathews realized his helmet strap was missing, he realized he had gone over the two-minute mark to take a hit. Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, appealed that Mathews had taken longer than necessary to take a strike, and as a result, the former captain of Sri Lanka lost. Angelo Mathews Brands Shakib Al Hasan As Disgraceful
After becoming the first batsman in international cricket history to be “timed out,” Angelo Mathews questioned the essence of the game. It occurred on November 6 in New Delhi, during the World Cup match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
It seems that while Angelo was getting ready for his first delivery, an equipment problem occurred and his helmet strap broke. It was over three minutes after the replacement helmet was obtained, which was longer than the two minutes allowed to face the following ball.
Even after the outcry, Shakib refused to withdraw his appeal, and an enraged Mathews called him “disgraceful” for “stooping low” in filing the appeal for his dismissal.
Completely shameful. We always play to win, but I never imagined that a team or individual would go to such lengths to secure a wicket,” Mathews said to the press following Bangladesh’s three-wicket victory.
Trevis Mathews, Mathews’ brother, has now criticized Shakib for his behavior and stated that the seasoned all-round player will not be accepted in Sri Lanka. Trevis went on to say that if Shakib visits the island nation to play, he will be showered with stones.
“We feel let down. The captain of Bangladesh lacked a sense of sportsmanship and exhibited no compassion throughout the gentleman’s game. This is something we never anticipated, from his captain to the other players on the team. In Sri Lanka, Shakib is not welcomed. Stones will be hurled at him or he will have to deal with the ire of the fans if he comes here to play any international or LPL matches, Trevis told BDCricTime.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have both been eliminated from the semifinals.
