There happened a bizarre incident today in the history of World Cricket! During the SL vs BAN ODI World Cup 2023 fixture being played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews grabbed the limelight as he became the first-ever batter to be timed out in the history of International Cricket during the World Cup 2023 group match against Bangladesh in New Delhi.
Why did Angelo Mathews was timed out
Angelo Matthews was timed out as he failed to make it to the pitch on time during the fixture. As per the timed-out rule, the batter has to return to the pitch within 3 minutes of a batter’s dismissal & get ready for the next delivery. Though Matthews entered the ground he encountered some issues with his helmet & to change that he went off the field. The process took the maximum allowed time & Bangladesh skipper decided to appeal. According to the rules, the umpire has to give Matthews timed out & in the process he departed without even facing a single delivery.
What do Cricket laws say about Time Out dismissal?
Rule 40.1.1. stated that after the fall of a wicket or retirement of a batter the incoming batter must be ready to receive a ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If the required time limit is exceeded the incoming batter will be termed ‘Timed out’.
As per rule 40.1.2 if the of an extended delay of a batter coming to the wicket, the umpires are entitled to adopt Procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match). For the purposes of that Law, the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 3 minutes referred to above. The bowler is not involved in such dismissal & they don’t receive credit for such dismissal.
Angelo Mathews was not happy with his timed-out dismissal. Just like the run-out at the non-striker’s end the ‘timed-out’ dismissal will create a controversy & trigger a huge debate on social media among cricket enthusiasts.
Coming to the fixture, riding on the heroics of Charith Assalanka (108) & valuable support of Samarawickrama (41), Dhananjaya (34) & De Silva (22) Sri Lanka managed to post a decent 279 runs total on board.
Currently, Bangladesh has begun their innings. Openers Tanzid (9) & Litton (23) were dismissed early in the powerplay overs reducing Bangladesh to 44-2. Now, Najmul Hassan (8 off 15) & Shakib (5) are taking Bangladesh’s innings ahead. They are aiming to stabilize Bangla’s ship by stitching a meaningful stand.
