Australian men’s cricket coach Andrew McDonald has signed a contract extension that will keep him in charge until the end of 2027. McDonald, who took over from Justin Langer two years ago, has led the team to considerable success across all formats, with highlights including the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship titles.
His extended tenure will see him guiding the team through critical tournaments, including the next World Test Championship (WTC), two World Cups, and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
“I am very fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players, coaches, and staff who are fully invested in the ongoing well-being, success, and development of this group,” McDonald said in a statement.
He credited the team’s professionalism and commitment, emphasizing that their unity and trust have been key to their success.
“International cricket has many challenges for all teams, and I am particularly proud of how the group, players and staff across all formats have navigated those together.”
The extension reflects McDonald’s achievements since his appointment in what was initially a controversial decision by Cricket Australia (CA). With McDonald at the helm, Australia has enjoyed a trophy-laden period, solidifying his leadership credentials and the trust CA has placed in him.
Nick Hockley, CA’s chief executive, expressed confidence in McDonald’s ability to steer the team through upcoming challenges.
“Andrew has proven to be an outstanding men’s head coach who, in addition to delivering exceptional results, has built a strong coaching team, methodology, and an excellent environment for the team to perform at its best,” Hockley said. “We are delighted to extend his tenure for a further two years.”
This new contract will take McDonald into a packed schedule that includes 13 months of Test cricket, featuring key away series against India and England and culminating in the 150th anniversary Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. CA hopes that McDonald’s leadership will bring continued success and a strong foundation for the future of Australian cricket.
As McDonald prepares for the busy years ahead, his commitment to fostering a positive team culture and developing talent across formats remains clear. The extension marks an endorsement not only of his accomplishments but of his vision for Australian cricket in an era marked by an intense international calendar and the constant challenge of balancing formats.
