Renowned two-time U.S. Chess Champion GM Alex Yermolinsky recently underwent life-saving heart surgery in Tekirdag, Turkey, which has left him feeling “overwhelmed with emotions” at the tremendous support he has received from the chess community.
Yermolinsky, a 67-year-old grandmaster born in the Soviet Union, was hospitalized on April 16 and underwent a four-way heart bypass surgery two days later. Following complications, he required a second emergency repair surgery on April 29 for sternal wound infection and respiratory failure.
Outpouring of Support
Friends of Yermolinsky launched a fundraiser to assist with the mounting medical bills, aiming to raise $64,000. Within 24 hours, close to 200 donors had already contributed over $41,000, showcasing the solidarity and generosity of the chess community.
Expressing his gratitude, Yermolinsky shared in a WhatsApp message to Chess.com, “I am overwhelmed with emotions. I feel so blessed with the outpouring of friendship.”

Despite the challenges, Yermolinsky remains in good spirits and has been informed by his doctors that it will be at least six months before he can return to the United States. He is expected to undergo a prolonged hospital stay with antibiotic therapy, but the long-term prognosis following the bypass surgery is excellent.
Describing the care he is receiving as “sultan’s treatment,” Yermolinsky mentioned that he is feeling much better and his spirits have been lifted following a conversation with his surgeon.

Yermolinsky, affectionately known as “Yermo” or “Uncle Yermo,” has had a distinguished career in chess. He achieved his first major success by winning the 1985 Leningrad City Championship in the Soviet Union and went on to become a grandmaster in 1992. He clinched his first U.S. Chess Championship in 1993 and repeated the feat in 1996. Additionally, he secured victories at the World Open in 1993, 1995, and 1996, earning a spot in the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in 2012.
