When you’re No. 1 for 428 weeks, you tend to build a strong head-to- head history against just about everybody. But look a little closer and you can see that the matchup—I won’t call it a rivalry—between the Serb and the Italian is more complicated than it might seem.Twice at Roland Garros, Djokovic has come back to beat Musetti in five sets. In 2021, he lost the first two; in 2024, they played until 3 in the morning. The one time that Musetti prevailed was also a marathon three-setter in Monte Carlo. These two like to construct points, they mix in a lot of slice, and they’ll finish at net when they can. All of which makes for entertaining, if prolonged, matches.A post shared by Tennis (@tennischannel)The other oddity between these two is that they’ve only played once on hard courts, in Dubai in 2022. The surface should favor Djokovic, who is a six-time champion in Miami. But will his current form favor him, too?In his first two rounds, Djokovic has jumped out to early leads and won in straight sets. But both times he had to go to a tiebreaker, and fight through some shaky patches, to win the second set. The Andy Murray era still seems to be a work in progress as far as how Djokovic wants to play.A post shared by Novak Djokovic (@djokernole)Musetti, meanwhile, hadn’t found a groove before Miami, either; he was just 4-2 in 2025 coming into the tournament. But he has competed well at this event, coming back from a set down to beat Quentin Halys and Felix Auger-Aliassime. He may find himself hard at work in a third set again on Tuesday.
