Afghanistan vs South Africa, 1st ODI Preview
AFG vs SA 1st Test:Afghanistan and South Africa are set to take on each other for a three-match ODI series, starting 18th September 2024. It is pertinent to note that this is the first time when the two teams are playing an ODI bilateral series in the history of the format. All three matches will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Afghanistan performed pretty well in the 2023 World Cup and they would be hoping to keep that momentum going in white-ball cricket. Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead the side, while the experienced campaigner, Rashid Khan makes his return to the side.
As for South Africa, Temba Bavuma will continue to lead the team. Most of the senior players have been given rest as the team management look to groom young players with an eye on the 2027 World Cup. Unfortunately, Bavuma won’t be participating in the first game due to illness and Aiden Markram will perform as a stand-in skipper.
AFG vs SA Team Preview
Afghanistan Team Review:
Afghanistan are coming with a full-strength team and they have a good amount of experience of playing at this very stadium. Their spinners are going to come in handy. Experienced campaigners in Rashid Khan and M Nabi will share the spin bowling duties.
Fazalhaq Farooqui, Fareed Ahmad Malik and Gulbadin Naib are likely to form the pace attack in the first ODI. Eyes will be on all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, who has made a terrific start to his career.
Opener, Rahmatullah Gurbaz has an outstanding record at this ground and will be a player to watch out for. The batting load will be supported by the likes of H Shahidi, Riaz Hassan, and Rahmat Shah to name a few.
South Africa Team Review:
Big match players such as Rabada, Nortje, Rassie van der Dussen, Henrich Klaasen and David Miller have all been rested. Tony de Zorzi and Reeza Hendricks are likely to open the innings, while the middle-order consist of Tristan Stubbs, Markram, and Jason Smith.
The likes of Mulder and Phehlukwayo should provide depth to this batting unit. Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger will spearhead the pace-attack and Bjorn Fortuin could be used as the front-line spinner.

- South Africa have a 45 percent chance of winning the match
Pitch Report and Conditions for Today Match
The boundaries are shorter and the batters aren’t afraid to go for the big shots. A lot of big scores we have been seen been scored here and chased as well. However, this is also a very slow surface and spinners tend to pick a lot of wickets as here. Looking at the last ten games here, anything between 260 and 280 is a competitive score. Both teams should look at bowl first after winning the toss.
Today Match Weather Report
The temperature will hover between 29 and 38 degrees Celsius. The wind will blow at a speed of 26 kmph, while the humidity is at 53 percent. As per the forecast, there is a 4 percent chance of rain affecting the game.
