Wet Conditions Continues to Halt Afghanistan-New Zealand Only Test Match in Greater Noida
The highly anticipated one-off Test match between Afghanistan and New Zealand at Greater Noida continues to face significant delays due to persistent rain and a waterlogged outfield. Day 2 of the match has also been called off after no play was possible on Day 1 due to the same issues.
The ground staff have been working tirelessly to fix the outfield, with fans, super soppers, and even replacing grass patches, but the conditions remain unsafe for play.
As of the latest update, the umpires concluded that while there was some improvement in the condition of the outfield, it was still not suitable for play. Player safety has been the main concern, particularly in key areas of the outfield such as the bowlers’ run-up, which remains dangerously slippery.
Despite efforts, including an early inspection scheduled for 12:00 local time and further assessments throughout the day, the match could not resume.
New Zealand players were seen practicing on a side pitch, with some of them even in casual footwear, indicating just how poor the field conditions were. The Afghanistan Cricket Board, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated that the toss is expected to take place at 9:00 am local time on Day 3, with play commencing at 9:30 am if weather permits.
Heavy rains over the last few weeks have compounded the issue, despite today’s bright and sunny conditions in the area. The groundsmen will have to continue working overnight to ensure the field is ready for tomorrow’s play, as both teams remain eager to get the game underway.
Fans are left disappointed as another day of international cricket has been lost, but player safety remains a priority. However, with rain expected over the next few days, the future of this Test match hangs in the balance.
