The Election Commission of India has just designated renowned Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar as a National Icon. The EC named Sachin Tendulkar as National Icon in advance of the 2019 elections for the Assembly and Lok Sabha. During his three-year term, Sachin will raise voter awareness and motivate them to cast ballots.
In order to boost voter turnout in the upcoming elections, the EC is taking this action. On Wednesday in New Delhi, Sachin and ECI signed a letter. The EC said in a statement, “This collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Tendulkar’s unparalleled impact with the youth for increasing voters’ participation in the forthcoming elections, especially in the general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024.”
Sachin Tendulkar as National Icon:
The partnership was established by the EC to address the issues of urban and youth voter apathy. In an effort to motivate voters and promote their participation in the electoral process, the EC has partnered with notable Indians from a variety of fields and given them the status of “national icons.”
The Election Commission has previously used well-known people as “national icons” to spur voter turnout, and Sachin isn’t the first. Actor Pankaj Tripathi, boxer Mary Kom, former Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and actor Aamir Khan have all been referred to as “national icons.” In previous elections, they strongly promoted voter participation.
