Australia’s former captain, Aaron Finch is likely to retire from the Big Bash League after the ongoing season. He was part of the Melbourne Renegades’ playing XI in the first four matches but decided to rest in the last two and give opportunities to youngsters like Mackenzie Harvey.
While speaking to Channel 7’s Jason Richardson, Finch revealed that the ongoing BBL season would be his last as a player.
“Is this officially your last season of Big Bash?” asked Richardson.
“Most likely, yes. I would say very likely, yes,” Finch responded.
Aaron Finch Had Retired From International Cricket This February
Aaron Finch has already been retired from international cricket and was seen commentating during the ICC 2023 World Cup. Despite that, he managed to play one more BBL season but the Australian understands that it is difficult to play every game, keeping in mind his fitness level and lack of preparation.
“As you get a little bit older, you start to, not doubt yourself, but it just becomes a little bit more difficult to be able to play every game,” Finch said.
“Especially when you’re not getting the consistent cricket throughout the year; there’s a tournament here, there’s a tournament there — (I’m doing) a bit more commentary than cricket, these days.”
“And once you start doing other things, it takes some time away from your preparation,” he explained.
“Not once you get into the tournament, just leading into the tournament.
Finch said that he didn’t get enough time to prepare himself for the Big Bash League as he was commentating right throughout the World Cup.
“Obviously (I was) commentating right throughout the World Cup, Australia going really deep in that was brilliant and it was amazing to be there to watch Australia win the World Cup final, but it probably didn’t give me the ideal lead-in to the Big Bash as a player.”
Finch didn’t play Melbourne Renegades’ last game but, fortunately, they came out victorious, thanks to impressive knocks from Jake Fraser-McGurk (70 off 37) and Shaun Marsh (54 off 33).
The Renegades restricted Adelaide Strikers to 177 in the first innings. Mujeeb Ur Rahman starred with the pick, picking 3 for 20 in 4 overs. In reply, the Melbourne Renegades chased down the score in just 18.4 overs.
They are slated to play their next match against Melbourne Stars on Tuesday at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
