Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time champions, had an outstanding season in IPL 2023. After a disastrous performance in 2022, the ‘Men in Yellow’ recovered by ensuring that all bases were covered. Thanks to the management, they appear to have covered all bases for the upcoming season as well. Notably, the dimensions of the limited overs landscape have shifted with the ODI World Cup. Here, we bring the 3 CSK cricket players who might get released.
There have been reports of major fitness issues amongst the circuit’s top athletes. In addition, there have been new names who have risen to the occasion. Now, as the franchises strive to build the ideal squad for the upcoming IPL season, it is imperative that the management release the underperforming players. However, these tradeoffs are more difficult than they appear because the players may perform exceptionally well.
CSK cricket players possibly to get released:
3. Sisanda Magala:
Sisanda Magala has struggled since being drafted into the national team. He has played in six T20 matches for South Africa and two IPL games for CSK. However, due to the presence of prominent match winners on both sides, Magala was forced to warm the benches.
In terms of IPL statistics, he was a member of the playing XI during the tournament’s early stages. He has only taken one wicket in two games and has an economy rate of 8.50. It appears that CSK has found their ideal playing XI, and Magala will most likely be released before the IPL 2024 season begins.
Things could have been different if MS Dhoni had given him more chances, but based on the circumstances and the outcome, it appears that CSK may not be the best franchise for the pacer. Rather, a team in need of a pacer will be a better fit for him. There is no doubt that his extensive experience in domestic cricket will benefit him.
2. Dwaine Pretorius:
Pretorius joined CSK during the mega auction in 2022 and was a key member of the squad the following year as well. The South African all-rounder came in as a replacement for Dwyane Bravo. However, it appears that CSK may no longer require his services.
Pretorius played six games in 2022, scoring 44 runs with a strike rate of 157.14. In addition, he had picked up six wickets for the team. However, because he only had one chance in 2023, MS Dhoni never included him in the squad. This indicates that the management has decided on their starting lineup for the long term.
The main issue with Pretorius as a CSK player is that he is an international player. And, for the time being, the management will not change the ideal combination for a new season because there will be no mega auction. As a result, it appears that Pretorius needs to find a new franchise that will help him develop as a cricketer.
1. Ben Stokes:
Ben Stokes drew the attention of the cricketing world last year when he was auctioned off for a whopping 16.25 crores in the 2023 IPL. He was also an all-rounder who was brought in to fill in for Bravo. However, injuries slowed his progress throughout the season.
A total of two games for someone of Stokes’ calibre is a sign of subpar fitness. This is more of a concern for CSK management because Stokes is an unstoppable force in full flow. His time with the former franchise, Rising Pune Supergiants, has demonstrated this. Sadly, Stokes was unable to repeat the feat for Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 season.
Furthermore, Stokes is scheduled to have surgery after the ODI World Cup in 2023. This implies that Stokes may face injury issues again this season. This is not good news for CSK, a team that relies on experience and the presence of all-rounders. As a result, the CSK management team may decide to release him just before the 2024 season.
Love for IPL:
The Indian Premier League (IPL) (also known as the TATA IPL for sponsorship reasons) is a men’s Twenty20 (T20) cricket league played in India each year, with ten city-based franchise teams competing. The BCCI established the league in 2007. Every year, the competition is held in the summer between March and May. Due to fewer international cricket tours taking place during IPL seasons around the world, it has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme.
The Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers (based in Hyderabad), Delhi Daredevils, Punjab XI Kings (Mohali), Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals (Jaipur) were the eight founding franchises. The BCCI expelled two franchises, Rajasthan and Punjab, from the league in late 2010 for violations of ownership policy, but they were later reinstated in time for the 2011 tournament.
For the 2011 season, the IPL welcomed two new franchises: the Pune Warriors India and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The BCCI terminated the Kochi club’s contract after only one year. The Sunrisers Hyderabad took over the Deccan Chargers in the IPL in 2013.
